Interview: King Lollipop
By Ruby Perez
On stage, Cody Blanchard is a wild mess of suspenders, bow ties and, at times, theatrical costumes. Though he is widely known as Shannon Shaw’s singing companion in Shannon and the Clams (with drummer Ian Amberson), a different side of Blanchard exists. Imagine if Hasil Adkins, Marc Bolan, and the Lollipop Guild had a glittery love child and you’d have King Lollipop, a band which pairs plucky guitar riffs and Blanchard’s distinct vocals with old-timey songs about wizards, pink trolls, and cheeseburgers.
The project began nearly three years ago after a few of Blanchard’s songs didn’t mesh with Shannon and the Clams. “I was writing songs, but they were very different. Almost simpler and stupider I guess, they sounded totally wrong with us,” says Blanchard. “I had these songs that were more percussive, simpler, and maybe sounded like people hanging outside of a farm.”
